A thing too boring to discuss here, the silly Bedford Level experiment, a cornerstone of flat earth mythology, has been thoroughly discredited as bad science. That's how science works. Claims are tested and proved or disproved. Eclipses, the moon, the behaviour of shadows and ships on the horizon, the rest of the universe, plus a million other proofs, show the earth is unequivocally round. Every flat Earth claim has already been surgically skewered by science.
So why would anyone believe it?
"The whole idea of us being a speck of dust just an insignificant accident is nothing anyone would ever tell your kids – 'Hey, just wanted to let you know you're an accident so get out there and win today," says US flat earther, Jonathan Vincent.
That's why. It's to do with the human fear of not being the centre of everything, of perhaps being alone and responsible for our own destiny.
A post-truth world:
Flat Earth thinking is dangerous because it's creating an intellectual and cultural environment where it's becoming more and more acceptable for the objective truth to be dismissed by subjective belief. It's moving us backwards as a species.
The truth, the only basis for ethics, morality, and the foundation our whole society is built on, is under threat like never before.
In war, the first casualty is truth. Misinformation, disinformation, propaganda and lies are the tools of the totalitarian.
If we're so purposefully stupid we begin to look away from things we know to be true, to dismiss the gifts of knowledge our forebears fought to bring us, the science that has have kept us alive, warm and filled our bellies so far, perhaps we deserve the world we want to believe in.
Just don't fall off the edge.

Hot Docs review: Behind the Curve, by Norman Wilner...
Unlike a few other films about people who hold questionable beliefs, Behind The Curve is a remarkably clear-eyed look at the Flat Earth movement, in which people around the globe (but mostly in America) labour to convince the rest of us that our planet is flat – more like a terrarium, really – but sinister forces have gone to elaborate lengths to keep it quiet.
It’s a literal conspiracy theory, and one spun out over and over again by the likes of Mark Sargent and Patricia Steere, who’ve become superstars in the Flat Earth YouTube community over the last few years. They don’t offer real answers, just innuendo and suspicion – Steere loves referring to “The Powers That Should Not Be” – but that’s what keeps people coming back, of course.
Documentarian Daniel J. Clark interviews them, and a few other believers, and lets them tell their version of reality – but he also speaks to astrophysicists and psychologists who efficiently debunk their beliefs and explain how people might have come to hold them. (The Dunning-Kruger effect, in which people convince themselves they know everything about something while actually knowing very little, is brought up fairly early on, along with confirmation bias, which keeps people focused on evidence that supports their existing beliefs rather than evidence that challenges them.)
While there’s entertainment value in watching the clown show of fringe weirdos drawn to the movement – one especially enthusiastic dolt swerves from terrarium theory to anti-vaxxer and Young Earth talking points in a matter of seconds – Clark also offers a compassionate view, hoping that the brighter ones might be talked back to an acceptance of reality. I want to believe he’s right.

"Writing in Nature Astronomy this week, Necib and her collaborators describe Nyx, a vast new stellar stream in the vicinity of the Sun, that may provide the first indication that a dwarf galaxy had merged with the Milky Way disk. These stellar streams are thought to be globular clusters or dwarf galaxies that have been stretched out along its orbit by tidal forces before being completely disrupted.
The discovery of Nyx took a circuitous route, but one that reflects the multifaceted way astronomy and astrophysics are studied today.
FIRE in the Cosmos
Necib studies the kinematics—or motions—of stars and dark matter in the Milky Way. "If there are any clumps of stars that are moving together in a particular fashion, that usually tells us that there is a reason that they're moving together."
Since 2014, researchers from Caltech, Northwestern University, UC San Diego and UC Berkeley, among other institutions, have been developing highly-detailed simulations of realistic galaxies as part of a project called FIRE (Feedback In Realistic Environments). These simulations include everything scientists know about how galaxies form and evolve. Starting from the virtual equivalent of the beginning of time, the simulations produce galaxies that look and act much like our own..."

Astronomers have thought for a long time that the Milky Way has grown by consuming other smaller galaxies that get caught up in its gravitational pull. But Gaia’s data gave astronomers an unprecedented look at how this has happened in the past, and how it’s still happening now.
A team of researchers working with Gaia data found a family of 30,000 stars moving through the Milky Way. These stars are all around us, interspersed with other stars, and they’re all moving the same speed and direction. But their motion is separate from the rest of the Milky Way. They’re moving in “elongated trajectories in the opposite direction to the majority of the Galaxy’s other hundred billion stars, including the Sun,” according to a press release...

With Gaia, we can measure the distance to the stars and see where they are more densely packed together, which is an indication of a spiral arm.”

The Milky Way is not a nice neighbour. It’s constantly taking stars from other star clusters and smaller galaxies. Gaia has shown us this in great detail, and has found streams of stars torn form other galaxies, stretching through space.
Our Sun Is A Solar Surfer
In our Solar System’s neighbourhood there are clouds of interstellar gas. A 2019 study showed that they form an undulating wave 9000 light years long. Its undulations take it up to 500 light years above and below the Milky Way’s disk. The wave is about 400 light years wide, and astronomers have named it the Local Arm. They say it’s a small spiral arm of the Milky Way.
Astronomers like to keep a keen eye on gas clouds, because that’s where new stars form.

Gaia space telescope measures solar system's acceleration, by Dresden University of Technology, phys.org

The measurement of the acceleration of our solar system by astronomers of TU Dresden is a scientific highlight of the third Gaia catalog, which is now being released. With its publication on December 3, 2020, at 12:00 , the public will have access to high-precision astronomical data, such as positions, velocities, magnitudes and colors of about 1.8 billion astronomical objects....
The Dresden team identified about 1.6 million Gaia objects to be quasars, which will now be published as a Gaia own celestial reference system. These quasars clearly show the expected motion pattern of the extremely small acceleration, which, according to the results produced in Dresden, is 0.23 nanometers per second squared. It is the first time that this detection is obtained using optical observations. Professor Klioner explains:
"Measuring the acceleration of the solar system with a relative precision of 7 percent is a very important scientific result, and at the same time, it is a convincing demonstration of the quality of the new data. The acceleration measured by Gaia shows a close agreement with theoretical expectations and provides important information on the motion of the solar system in the gravitational field of our galaxy."

A Rogue Star Hurling Towards the Solar System Is Going To Arrive Sooner Than We Realised, by Michelle Starr, sceincealert.com

Gliese 710 is what is classified as a rogue star - one that has gone roaming across the galaxy, free of the gravitational chains that normally hold stars in position.
At a speed of 51,499 kilometres per hour (32,000 miles per hour), it's not quite fast enough to be considered a runaway star, but it's still travelling at a hefty clip.
We've known Gliese 710 was on a trajectory that would bring it close to the Solar System since at least 1996, but it wasn't until late 2016 that we had a decent ballpark on the timeframe.
Based on the first release of data from the ESA's Gaia mission, astronomers Filip Berski and Piotr A. Dybczyński calculated that Gliese 710, then around 63.8 light-years (19.6 parsecs) away in the northern constellation of Serpens, was due to arrive in approximately 1.35 million years.
Now astronomers Raul de la Fuente Marcos and Carlos de la Fuente Marcos from the University of Madrid have checked that calculation based on the second, more accurate release of Gaia data from earlier this year, and confirmed it.
With a major difference: using the new data, the arrival time has been pushed forward by a few tens of thousands of years - and could brush closer than previously expected to the Solar System.

There is no flat Earth theory, as evident by...
Every year "shooting stars" appear in the sky, radiating from specific points. Yet the flat Earth community HAS NEVER published when meteor showers would occur. And there are a thousand and one other reasons why there is no such theory.
A body of descriptions of knowledge can be called a theory if it fulfills the following criteria:
- It makes falsifiable predictions with consistent accuracy across a broad area of scientific inquiry (such as mechanics).
- It is well-supported by many independent strands of evidence, rather than a single foundation.
- It is consistent with preexisting experimental results and at least as accurate in its predictions as are any preexisting theories.
Flat Earth fulfills not a single one of those requirements.

Sizing up the International Space Station Using the Moon
This landmark parallax study of the ISS as viewed from the Earth's surface confirms that it is real, and currently in orbit.

Abstract:
Altitude, size and velocity of the ISS determined by transit over the Moon, as seem at 2 different surface locations simultaneously.
Both observers see the ISS at the same time, at slightly different positions in the sky, due to parallax.

Notice that in the image below, where Vincent and Astronomy Live are at the same location, the ISS appears at the same apparent position over the moon. NO PARALLAX because both observers are at the same Earth surface point.

As the ISS gets closer to the observers on the ground as it rises higher in their sky, the two tracks are correctly closer together at the bottom and farther apart at the top of the Moon.
"The difference in the path is due to parallax and we can use that to actually measure the range to the space station, and from that calculate things like the altitude of the ISS, the size, and the velocity.

Now take angular size of the ISS on the image above to calculate its range / distance. And we get range = 509.8 km.
Flat Earth height = 408 km, and curved earth height = 414.85 km.

Now that we know the range ( 509.8 km) we can calculate the size and velocity of the space station.
On this pass the ISS was very high and therefore the space station was presenting itself practically face-on.

Without gravity, the density of the universe would be essentially uniform (and very small).
So flat Earth advocates, if no gravity than what caused matter to clump together all over the cosmos?
Of the four fundamental forces of nature, gravity is felt by everybody, large or small, and links every atomic particle in nature.
Geocentrism is a common example of the religious core belief that humanity must be something special, and by association the Earth must hold a special place in the cosmos. But as we have learned more about the universe, we find ourselves in an unexceptional arm of a standard spiral Galaxy (Milky Way), one of billions in the visible universe.
But if you only believe what you can see, all it takes is a bit of geometry and basic physics to prove that the Earth is a sphere. Try it.
Argumentum ad nauseam (also known as an argument by repetition, i.e. "the earth is flat, the earth is flat") is the logical fallacy that something becomes true if it is repeated often enough.
The intellectual dynamic here, is one of rejection and obfuscation.

This simple & correctly done (laser-over-water) test demonstrates Earth curvature.
So why does FECORE, Globebusters, Jeranism, D. Marble, Hot Potatoes and others have such a hard time doing it themselves? It's so easy. One simple experiment and the whole flat Earth issue can be settled. Done. Over with.
Why such controversy? It's an easy open-and-shut case.
But meanwhile, FECORE and others continue to rake in thousands of dollars from gullible people.

New poll reveals the big reason belief in the flat Earth is booming

It seems absurd, but belief that the Earth is flat is booming in America – with a new poll suggesting that up to 2% of people now believe the Earth is not a globe.
Alarmingly, up to 5% of people who used to believe the Earth was a globe now say they are ‘not sure’ as a new Flat Earther movement has gained huge amounts of publicity online, with celebrity fans such as Freddie Flintoff and the rapper B.o.B.
The ‘new’ Flat Earther movement began on internet forums and spilled over onto networks such as YouTube – with believers claiming that a global conspiracy is hiding the truth, and that all space pictures are faked.
But a new poll this week offered insight into WHY so many people believe the Earth is flat – and it’s all to do with God.
A YouGov poll of 8,215 people in America found that 52% of people believe the Earth is flat consider themselves ‘very religious’.
Many say that evidence for the Earth being flat is found in scripture, YouGov said.

During that Globebusters video one person donated (NOK 5000 = $643.95 USA). Under the Freedom of Information Act, Jeran requested that NASA provide a copy of the November 22, 2006, video of "where cosmonaut Mikhail Tyurin hit a gold ball from the porch of the International Space Station, making it the longest golf shot in history."
NASA provides for no charge, the first 2-hours of search time and the first 100-pages of duplication in compliant with FOIA. But they are allowed to charge money when more time/effort than that is involved. And as it turns out, this request (up to 7-hours of archival footage duplication) is the more complicated because the cosmonaut Mikhail Tyurin event was not taped with USA equipment. The Russians did the taping. Therefore, NASA would need to do considerable data transformation to fulfill Jaren Campanella's request.
The $643.95 raised covers a good chunk of the total bill (around $1,000) but not all of it.
Going forward let's see if Jaren Campanella uses that money to pay NASA, or it just ends up in his pocket.

This one fact, that some star constellations are visible from the southern hemisphere and not from New York City (northern hemisphere) should have settled the flat Earth debate long ago. Period. Done.
But recognition that fact-after-fact presented does not change the minds of flat Earth supporters, clearly demonstrates that for them various EMOTIONAL and RELIGIOUS issues rather than logic/science guide and feed their continuous denial of reality.
The Flat Earth model fundamentally conflicts with the things we see in nature. The stars below are not visible from New York City (or the northern hemisphere). Look for yourself.

The claim by Ufologist Urandir Fernandes de Oliveira is that - Earth is a convex shaped asteroid with an additional continent beyond the Antarctic wall.
Mainstream flat Earth advocates are up in arms saying this video must be a psyops plant by the "controlled opposition" to muddy up and confuse the flat Earth debate. FECORE - Failed to provide evidence that the Earth is flat, at Lake Balaton (Hungary) Jan - Feb 2018

Abstract:
The FECORE team did not attempt to prove that the Earth is flat at Lake Balaton.
During the entire course of the experiment they did not use any of the standard Geodetic survey tools; such as an internationally approved Theodolite/Auto level, GPS tracker, level staff, ranging rod, retro-reflector and surveyor’s tripod.
They did not place level staffs or sighting targets at various marker points along the Lake Balaton shoreline, to demonstration progressive tracking of Earth flatness over length.
They did not stake laser reflectors at various locations along the shoreline, and target them with a laser beam to demonstrate that the beam is truly pointed parallel to the water's surface over distance. That is a primary requirement to corroborate flatness.
The FECORE team did however, attempt thru a single measurement, to imply "proof by contradiction."
Proof by contradiction is a form of indirect proof, that establishes the truth or validity of a proposition. It starts by assuming that the opposite proposition is true, and then shows that such an assumption leads to a contradiction.
The error in this type of approach is the "assumption" that the Earth can only have two possible valid shapes - either flat or spherical. Attempting to prove that the Earth is not spherical, does not authenticate that the Earth is flat. And other flat Earth supporters willingly testify that the Earth is concave, convex, or undoubtedly a flat plane with as yet unmeasured total dimensions.
The shore-to-shore laser test should not have been wrapped up at the 12-km distance mark. Data at 12-km is not conclusive. That is around the FUZZY distance where, a) optical refraction, b) no precise measurements of source and target height above the water line, and c) no exact distance between source and target established - create a situation where a few meters can be argued about back and forth.
This is what they delivered, and why their claim will forever be in dispute.
To definitively prove flatness shore-to-shore measurements at 20-km, 30-km, 40-km, 50-km, 60-km and further are required. But FECORE did not render that.

YouTube will add Wikipedia links debunking conspiracy theory videos
Google-owned YouTube is trying to combat the amount of misinformation spread on its site, announcing that it will link videos that promote conspiracy theories to "fact-based" sites like Wikipedia pages.
YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki made the announcement Tuesday (March 13, 2018) at the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas.
YouTube's recommendation engine and autocomplete feature have come under fire this year for pushing users toward conspiracy theories and other divisive content.
In coming months, Wojcicki said, conspiracy videos will start including text boxes, dubbed "information cues," that link to third-party sources that debunk the hoaxes in question.

What is stellar parallax?
Stellar parallax is the apparent shift of position of any nearby star (or other object) against the background of distant objects. Created by the different orbital positions of Earth, the extremely small observed shift is largest at time intervals of about six months, when Earth arrives at exactly opposite sides of the Sun in its orbit, giving a baseline distance of about two astronomical units between observations. The parallax itself is considered to be half of this maximum, about equivalent to the observational shift that would occur due to the different positions of Earth and the Sun, a baseline of one astronomical unit (AU).
Hipparchus (190 BCE - 120 BCE) tried to measure the parallax but he could not observe any visible effect.

Stellar parallax is so difficult to detect that its existence was the subject of much debate in astronomy for thousands of years.
No one in Galileo's time or for almost 200 years after his death was able to demonstrate this necessary effect of earth's motion around the sun.
It was first observed by Giuseppe Calandrelli who reported parallax in α-Lyrae in his work "Osservazione e riflessione sulla parallasse annua dall’alfa della Lira.
Then in 1838 Friedrich Bessel made the first successful parallax measurement ever, for the star 61 Cygni, using a Fraunhofer heliometer at Königsberg Observatory.

Once a star's parallax is known, its distance from Earth can be computed trigonometrically. But the more distant an object is, the smaller its parallax. Even with 21st-century techniques in astrometry, the limits of accurate measurement make distances farther away than about 100 parsecs (roughly 326 light years) too approximate to be useful when obtained by this technique.
This limits the applicability of parallax as a measurement of distance to objects that are relatively close on a galactic scale. Other techniques, such as spectral red-shift, are required to measure the distance of more remote objects.

Gaia already has:
Determine the position, parallax, and annual proper motion of 1-billion stars with an accuracy of about 20 micro arc-seconds (µas) at 15 mag.
The distance to about 20 million stars has thus be measured with a precision of 1% or better, and about 200 million distances will be measured to better than 10%. Distances accurate to 10% will be achieved as far away as the Galactic Center, 30,000 light-years away.
Temperature estimates for bright stars, a number of light curves and information on over 10,000 pre-selected asteroids.
Red and blue photometric data for about 1.1 billion stars

Today (3 December), an international team of astronomers announced the most detailed ever catalogue of the stars in a huge swathe of our Milky Way galaxy. The measurements of stellar positions, movement, brightness and colours are in the third early data release from the European Space Agency's Gaia space observatory, now publicly available. Initial findings include the first optical measurement of the acceleration of the Solar system. The data set, and early scientific discoveries, were presented at a special briefing hosted by the Royal Astronomical Society.
Launched in 2013, Gaia operates in an orbit around the so-called Lagrange 2 (L2) point, located 1.5 million kilometres behind the Earth in the direction away from the Sun. At L2 the gravitational forces between the Earth and Sun are balanced, so the spacecraft stays in a stable position, allowing long-term essentially unobstructed views of the sky.
The primary objective of Gaia is measure stellar distances using the parallax method. In this case astronomers use the observatory to continuously scan the sky, measuring the apparent change in the positions of stars over time, resulting from the Earth's movement around the Sun.
Knowing that tiny shift in the positions of stars allows their distances to be calculated. On Earth this is made more difficult by the blurring of the Earth's atmosphere, but in space the measurements are only limited by the optics of the telescope.
Two previous releases included the positions of 1.6 billion stars. This release brings the total to just under 2 billion stars, whose positions are significantly more accurate than in the earlier data. Gaia also tracks the changing brightness and positions of the stars over time across the line of sight (their so-called proper motion), and by splitting their light into spectra, measures how fast they are moving towards or away from the Sun and assesses their chemical composition.
The new data include exceptionally accurate measurements of the 300,000 stars within the closest 326 light years to the Sun. The researchers use these data to predict how the star background will change in the next 1.6 million years. They also confirm that the Solar system is accelerating in its orbit around the Galaxy.
This acceleration is gentle, and is what would be expected from a system in a circular orbit. Over a year the Sun accelerates towards the centre of the Galaxy by 7 mm per second, compared with its speed along its orbit of about 230 kilometres a second.
Gaia data additionally deconstruct the two largest companion galaxies to the Milky Way, the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds, allowing researchers to see their different stellar populations. A dramatic visualisation shows these subsets, and the bridge of stars between the two systems.

The north star Polaris is not 3,000-miles above a flat Earth as many claim
Question:
If the North Star Polaris was only 3,000 miles above a flat Earth (just a flat plane), how high would it appear to be above the horizon from various places?
Get real. If you don't believe the following numbers, then just go to your local high school and ask a trigonometry teacher.
Using the following flat Earth map, with the North Pole at the very center, start counting latitude lines going left toward the edge...
So on a flat Earth, if you were standing at the North Pole, the star Polaris would be 90-degrees above the horizon, directly overhead.
Same as on the globe Earth.
So on a flat Earth, if you were standing at the Equator, the star Polaris would be 57-degrees above the horizon. But in reality it's not. The correct observed altitude is 0-degrees, as the star Polaris rests directly on the horizon. Millions of people can attest to this.
So on a flat Earth, if you were standing in Sydney Australia, the star Polaris would be 47-degrees above the horizon. But in reality, Polaris is not observable at all from Australia.
So on a flat Earth, if you were standing at the South Pole, the very edge of the flat Earth, the star Polaris would still be visible at an angle of 37-degrees above the horizon. But reality confirms that the star Polaris is nowhere to be seen on the Earth's southern hemisphere.
Calculating Sydney, Australia, trig function arctangent DEGREES(ATAN(3000 / 2780)) = 47o altitude above the horizon.
The following diagram has been drawn to scale (height of the star Polaris at 3,000-miles, about the flat Earth radius)...
Summary: So please review these math figures and change your attitude. Based on the above calculations, the star Polaris is not 3,000-miles away and the Earth is not flat.

FECORE - Lake Balaton "The Biggest Laser Experiment in History" goes BUST

March 18th - FECORE declares success with their 12-km Lake Balaton test (not 67-km as advertised).
We will wait a few days to see that else they announce, before presenting our analysis.
We at FlatEarthLunacy know that even if Lake Balaton had indeed frozen solid, this experiment would have been a failure - because a laser is not the correct choice of instrument for this type of experiment.
Due to laser beam divergence and atmospheric turbulence, out past 6-miles it would be practically impossible to keep a laser beam parallel to the frozen surface.
For a laser, even a collimated beam does not remain pencil thin forever. It diverges (spreads out) with distance. And the round outer-edge of the laser divergent beam is effected by optical refraction.
The correct tool for this type of experiment is to use the same equipment that a professional surveyor uses. Theodolite/Auto level, GPS tracker, level staff, ranging rod, retro-reflector and surveyor’s tripod.
A standard Auto level (shown below) has a total measurement angle of uncertainly (plus or minus) of 0.5 arc-seconds. That is equivalent to 0.0024 MRAD.
Compared to the FECORE laser with an advertised specification beam divergence of 0.08 MRAD, the Auto level is 33 times more accurate.
Always use an Auto level over a laser.

After only three months the neophyte amateur wannabe arctic explorers have withdrawn their request for SEAL Project funding. Their signature project kick-off video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atOp4FHmPVA) has been taken off their channel and delisted.
What are we to make of these new events?
As of today:
1) Indiegogo fund collection account has been closed.
2) The kick-off YouTube video for this project is no longer listed on their channel page.
3) Their web site northsealproject.org has no content.
4) There have been no further project updates for over 3-months.
5) Comments are suddenly DISABLED on all their videos. They seem to want no communication.
6) Why Oh Why is their website (northsealproject.org) registered from Panama? That country is well known for financial impropriety.

FECORE - doomed from the onset because of inadequate planning and lack of common sense, the Lake Balaton (in Hungary) flat Earth laser experiment is on the slippery slope to irrelevance.
Update - February 1, 2018
Now moving to plan B and C (shore to shore) since the lake will not be frozen in February.
The test is now - if you can just see the laser beam from across the lake, that is their proof of flatness -> no cuvature. But that is not a meaningful test. That only leads to inconclusive results.
They have made no provision that the center of the divergent beam remains exactly parallel to the water as it traverses the 65 km across the lake.
For example, if the laser beam is 8-feet above the water at the starting point, will the center of the beam be exactly 8-feet above the water 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 km's down range? If they do not show measurements to prove that (it's still precisely 8.00-feet above the water) for every meter across the lake, THE RESULTS WILL BE WORTHLESS.
Standard techniques for measuring laser beam divergence thru a collimator -
1. Focal Length Method – this one only is ISO compliant
divergence = tan-1 ( beam width / focal length )

2. Far-Field Wide Angle Method - This method is well suited to rapidly-diverging laser beams
divergence = 2 ∙ tan-1 [ beam width / (2 ∙ distance) ]

To date no flat Earth proponent has ever put forward a chart or physics/math model for calculating atmospheric refraction on a flat Earth. They do propose to determine what that value is - for this experiment. I would really like to see that.
So far they have not announced that they will be taking temperature and barometric pressure measurements ALL along the laser 65 km path. Without those, no refraction conclusions are possible. Without this correct allowance for refraction, their results will be inclusive.

Unlike the other terms, wattage refers not to the amount or quality of light emitted, but rather to the amount of electrical energy poured into the light source. A lumen is a unit of measurement gauging how much total light a device or bulb produces, regardless of beam focus. The laser experiment has received its first postponement, from January now to February 14-28, 2018.
Normally scientific equipment enters Europe thru pre-approved channels; either involving a participating university or government consortium. Unless there are special circumstances, it needs to be shipped to Europe by a freight forwarder with adequate documentation to pass customs. There is also a customs fee to be paid. This process often takes 1-4 months.
With regard to airline travel, it's questionable if the American TSA (Transportation Security Administration) would let them pack anything larger than a laser pen in their luggage, without additional screening. Larger scientific instruments with lenses attract considerable attention.
If Bob Knodel and Jaren Campanella and his crew of twenty people suddenly showed up at Lake Balaton and started setting up tripods, lasers and cameras - the local authorities will swoop down on them. They could be accused of nefarious activities and end up in jail. Such an activity needs to be pre-approved by the authorities and the local community, and arranged weeks ahead of time. Lake Balaton is a vacation destination site. Since it generates commerce they do not want activities (like this) that disrupt planned community winter events and celebrations for the visiting public.
But FECORE will be saved by the non-compliance of the weather. Based on historical records, the chance of having a frozen Lake Balaton in February 2018 is only 10%
The actual experiment laser deployment and measurement plan as currently outlined by them is untenable, and very unlikely to produce any results of value.
The only thing that will allow the FECORE incompetent crew to save face, is that Lake Balaton will not freeze over this February.

FECORE drops the word FLAT from the title of their upcoming "EARTH CONVENTION UK" conference.
Is this a ploy to whitewash the true intent of the convention, appear more mainstream, and attract greater sponsorship? But on the flipside, they will not get the recognition and publicity that they desperately want, because it will be overlooked by the media.

a) living floor 1 (since only floors 2 - 9 are visible)
b) main floor (lobby & garage)
c) possibly part of living floor 2, since an outside balcony hides the bottom 3 or so feet of the picture window where the light is shining from
d) some contribution due to atmospheric thermal inversion refraction, which bending light downward allow you to see curvature already below the horizon

Antarctica flight herald's new era for tourism to South Pole area - 3,944 people went in 2016

A Chinese business jet landed safely at the Wolfs Fang Airport in Antarctica on Saturday night, the first time a Chinese private jet operator has operated a flight to the southernmost continent.
The aircraft, with 22 Chinese passengers onboard, flew from Hong Kong to Cape Town International Airport, and then flew to Antarctica. Next, the team will fly around five to six hours to the South Pole, and it will become the first self-organized Chinese scientific research team.
The plane, operated by Hainan Airlines, was a Deer Jet Gulfstream G650 aircraft. Deer Jet said it had planned the flight for a year, and conducted hundreds of risk tests, flight routes, flight support and emergency plans to ensure the flight could be performed safely.
Beijing-based Deer Jet, a subsidiary of Hainan Airlines, said the successful landing of the jet in Antarctica signals that the business jet sector in China has entered the market in Antarctica, and it will provide opportunities for business and leisure travelers who would like to travel to the continent.
Wang Wen, a professor from Renmin University of China, who was on the flight, said the launching of a Chinese commercial flight to Antarctica will arouse the interest of Chinese tourists.
"It will also encourage more Chinese consumers to pay attention to Antarctica, in addition to the responsibilities that China should take in the continent," he said.
Ctrip.com, China's largest online travel agency, said it had received an unusually large number of inquiries for its Antarctica tours this year and estimated that more than 1,000 Chinese tourists would be staying in Antarctica during the upcoming Spring Festival holiday in February.
Most trips to Antarctica cost more than 100,000 yuan ($15,152). The best season to visit the continent is usually between December and February, as it is the summer time there.
To cater to this demand, Beijing Caissa International Travel Service Co, a company in which HNA Group holds around half of the shares, said it plans to officially launch travel products to the South Pole next year.
