Parker Solar Probe Hurtles Past the Sun, Making its Closest Approach so far (universetoday.com)

We’ve covered plenty of the Parker Solar Probe’s exploits here at UT, but it keeps breaking new records almost every month.  Now, with its newest flyby, it has gotten closer to the Sun than ever before, breaking its own record from previous flybys.

Parker’s latest closest pass took place on Sunday, November 21st, as part of its 10th circuit of the Sun.  Passing just 5.3 million miles from the solar surface, Parker is only about 5% of the Earth’s distance to the Sun.  Such close flybys require the spacecraft to be vigilant with its sun shield. Any direct exposure to the full for of the Sun at that distance would cook the probe’s internals.

That’s not the only problem Parker has to contend with.  We previously reported how even small grains of dust in the inner solar system could become dangerous projectiles when the probe slams into them, going a blazing 586,864 kph (364,600 mph), or 163 kilometers per second (101 miles per second).

Dust grains will continue to be a problem as the probe picks up even more speed after its completed 10th “solar encounter,” which ended on November 26th. Its next milestone is another Apehelion for its next cycle scheduled for January 8th.  In the meantime, Parker will begin transmitting its latest data haul on December 23rd, so scientists will still have to wait a bit before they can start searching for any new discoveries.  That data dump will make for an excellent holiday present for solar physicists everywhere.

First of its kind experiment uses diamond anvils to simulate the Earth's core

For the first time, experiments and simulations have shown researchers details about this outer core which were previously unobtainable. And these experiments include some fascinating details.

"Recreating conditions found at the center of the Earth up here on the surface is not easy," remarked Project Assistant Professor Yasuhiro Kuwayama from the Department of Earth and Planetary Science. "We used a diamond anvil to compress a sample of liquid iron subject to intense heat. But more than just creating the conditions, we needed to maintain them long enough to take our measurements. This was the real challenge."

Einstein's equivalence principle:

At the heart of Einstein’s theory of gravity (general relativity) is the equivalence principle. The equivalence principle says that there is no difference between being stationary and subject to gravity tugging you and accelerating in a vehicle that's free of gravitational pull.

In practice, this means that there is no difference between inertial mass (the mass a rocket works on) and gravitational mass (the mass the Earth tugs on). This equivalence has been measured time and time again with no violation ever found.

New study: Infrared measurement of the Moon's surface from the Earth verify yet again, that the Moon is not "just a light in the sky."  The Moon is a large spherical solid object, in orbit around the Earth, that reflects sunlight at various angles during the month.  This study shows the large variation in brightness correlated to sunlight incident angle.

Both the absolute and the relative brightness distribution of the MIR lunar disk changes with the solar incidence angle. The signatures of the MIR Moon are controlled by both the reflection and emission of the lunar surface. We also show first-ever brightness temperature maps of the lunar disk without needing a mosaic, which better show the temperature variation across the lunar disk. They reveal that the relationship between brightness temperature and solar incidence angle i is cos1/bi, and the power parameter is smaller than the Lambertian temperature model of cos1/4i observed for lunar orbit-based measurements. The slower decrease of the brightness temperature when moving away from the sub-solar point than the Lambertian model is due to topographic effects. The brightness temperature is dominated by albedo and the solar incidence angle and influenced by the topography. Our results indicate that the Moon in the MIR exhibits many interesting phenomena which were previously unknown, and contains abundant information about lunar reflection and thermal emission for future study."

Nathan Thompson - Arrested; Flat Earth activism taken too far.

Nathan Thompson arrested for harassing children.  The charge is "disorderly conduct." 
He was out in the streets advocating for flat earth.  He flagged down people, teachers and children, also trying to hand out flat earth pamphlets.  He told the children they were lied to at school about the shape of the earth.  When approached by the police and asked to stop soliciting and bothering people, he refused and got into an argument with them about personal rights.

So what now? 
The Flat Earth movement didn’t arrive to their point of argument by way of logic or evidence, and they won’t abandon it by way of logic or evidence^KH.

The leaders of the flat Earth movement (Eric Dubay, Marc Sargent, Bob Knodel, Math Powerland, Jeran Campanella, Nathan Thompson, etc.) now literally have blood on their hands, for feeding false indoctrination to people.  They are responsible for pushing Mike Hughes to risk (and give his life) for their fictional belief - that the Earth is flat.

Using ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT), astronomers have captured the unprecedented dimming of Betelgeuse, a red supergiant star in the constellation of Orion. The stunning new images of the star's surface show not only the fading red supergiant but also how its apparent shape is changing.

Betelgeuse has been a beacon in the night sky for stellar observers but it began to dim late last year. At the time of writing Betelgeuse is at about 36% of its normal brightness, a change noticeable even to the naked eye. Astronomy enthusiasts and scientists alike were excitedly hoping to find out more about this unprecedented dimming.

A team led by Miguel Montargès, an astronomer at KU Leuven in Belgium, has been observing the star with ESO's Very Large Telescope since December, aiming to understand why it's becoming fainter. Among the first observations to come out of their campaign is a stunning new image of Betelgeuse's surface, taken late last year with the SPHERE instrument.

The team also happened to observe the star with SPHERE in January 2019, before it began to dim, giving us a before-and-after picture of Betelgeuse. Taken in visible light, the images highlight the changes occurring to the star both in brightness and in apparent shape.

Many astronomy enthusiasts wondered if Betelgeuse's dimming meant it was about to explode. Like all red supergiants, Betelgeuse will one day go supernova, but astronomers don't think this is happening now. They have other hypotheses to explain what exactly is causing the shift in shape and brightness seen in the SPHERE images. "The two scenarios we are working on are a cooling of the surface due to exceptional stellar activity or dust ejection towards us," says Montargès. "Of course, our knowledge of red supergiants remains incomplete, and this is still a work in progress, so a surprise can still happen."

Recent observations of Betelgeuse have revealed that the star's unexpected and significant dimming periods in late 2019 and early 2020 were most likely caused by the ejection and cooling of dense hot gases, and that the star may be going through another dimming period more than a year early.

Between October and November 2019, Hubble Space Telescope observed dense, heated material moving outward through the star's extended atmosphere at 200,000 miles per hour. The following month, several ground-based telescopes observed a decrease in brightness in Betelgeuse's southern hemisphere, as if something was blocking light in this region of the star. By February 2020, the star had lost more than two-thirds of its brilliance, a dimming visible even to the naked eye, creating buzz that the star might be going supernova. Continued ultraviolet light spectroscopic observations with Hubble provided a timeline for researchers to follow, like breadcrumbs leading back through time to pinpoint the source of the mysterious dimming.

"With Hubble, we had previously observed hot convection cells on the surface of Betelgeuse and in the fall of 2019 we discovered a large amount of dense hot gas moving outwards through Betelgeuse's extended atmosphere. We think this gas cooled down millions of miles outside the star to form the dust that blocked the southern part of the star imaged in January and February," said Andrea Dupree, associate director of the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian, and lead author on the study. "The material was two to four times more luminous than the star's normal brightness. And then, about a month later the south part of Betelgeuse dimmed conspicuously as the star grew fainter. We think it possible that a dark cloud resulted from the outflow that Hubble detected. Only Hubble gives us this evidence that led up to the dimming."

Asteroid experts catch final glimpse of Solar Orbiter, by phys.org

Last night, ESA's Planetary Defence team observed the rare moment in which an object escaped our planet's gravity, in contrast to their normal objects of study—potentially hazardous rocks that could strike it.

At 19:15 UTC (20:15 CET) on 10 February, just over 20 hours after the launch of Solar Orbiter, the team took the opportunity to capture this sequence of observations using the Schmidt telescope at Calar Alto, Spain.

The clip covers a timespan of about 10 minutes, and is made up of 36 observations each 10 seconds long.

At the time it was taken, Solar Orbiter was roughly 310,000 km away from Earth and traveling to Venus for its first gravitational assist around Christmas day this year. Still within the Moon's orbit—just—it was already a faint object in the sky, shining as bright as a magnitude 19.5 star (250 000 times fainter than we can see with the naked eye).

Iru Landucci breaks his promise to keep guest airline pilot's identity confidential.  A betrayal of trust.

As you can see in the below meeting announcement photo, Iru presented the guest pilot with pixelated faces to protect their privacy and employment.  Iru Landucci promised privacy, and for those same reasons Landucci said that the talk would not be broadcast live. It would be recorded, edited, and then posted on YouTube.

The surprise came on Saturday when contrary to the previous agreement, the talk was broadcast live.  The pilot is seen giving his talk about the handling of aircraft and flight instrumentation.  Individual people at the conference also took screen shots and recorded the talk.  

The pilot had no idea this was a flat Earth meeting.  The pilot acknowledges that he barely knows Iru Landucci and that he was invited to give a talk with "people of different thinking."  At no time was he warned of the media impact that this would have on him.  Because this was presented as a flat Earth event, the pilot (who does not agree with flat Earth) is now at risk of his job and family livelihood.

An exchange of emails between the pilot and Landucci are also shown below - where Iru promised complete confidentiality.

When it was brought to Iru's attention that he had broken his promise, he went into damage control mode.  Iru asked his followers NOT TO TALK ABOUT THE AIRCRAFT PILOT.

The identity of the pilot was soon found, and the pilot had to erase his social networks and Linkedin profiles, due to hate mail and persecution because of this appearance at this event.  

Iru Landucci is now trying to erase all evidence of his throwing the pilot under the bus (to the ground).  

The pilot has since state that, "at no time were they clear with him, because nobody informed him of the movement of the flat earth and anti flat earth in the social media networks."

In 2004 the Civilian Space Exploration team launched their go fast rocket 72 miles above the earth to become the first amateur group to be confirmed as having launched a rocket into space.

They repeated this again in 2014.  Achieved an altitude of 73 miles above the earth while simultaneously filming the view with a variety of GoPro cameras.  Although the rocket is rotating very rapidly at takeoff it quickly comes to a sudden stop when it reaches a point near the apogee after its launch. 

After it stops rotating the first stage is jettisoned while the rocket is still traveling upward.

The sudden stop of the rockets rotation became a popular talking point for flat earthers all over YouTube.  And you can still see this claim being made to this day where they will say that the first amateur rocket to be launched into space actually bounced off the dome and was captured doing so on video.

Mr. Ky Michaelson (team leader) said, “one of the things to stabilize the rocket, we had to spin it 6 times per second because the government won’t allow us to put any type of steering on it.  It’s basically like firing a bullet out of a rifle and spins. 

After the GoPros came out you could buy them cheap so we put them on our next flight.  It wasn’t to make the earth look round or flat or anything.  So because we had to spin this and we want to get good shoots of the earth we decided to build a D spin.  Basically it was a cable that was wrapped around with a weight, and once we got that to the altitude where we are at – pushed the button, it unspun, and it’s just like a yo-yo, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.  And that’s the sound you hear “zui” – and the rocket stopped rotating immediately after that sound.  No dome or anything  like that.  That stopped it from spinning. 

The next sound that you hear is “ping.”  That is a piece of C4 that’s wrapped around the body itself and the booster just fell off, and you’ll see the booster, and again no dome because that thing is still going well over 400 mph.  That is still traveling.  The payload showed us is still traveling at that point…"

Summary: It really was just a yo-yo D spin mechanism that stopped the rockets rotation.

Auckland, New Zealand and Madrid, Spain are a near antipodal pair. Both are located at the diametrically opposite points to each other on Earth’s surface. Therefore, we can fly from Auckland in any direction and arrive in Madrid after traveling a roughly similar distance, regardless of the direction taken.

Any flight between an antipodal pair has a similar duration even though the different flights have different directions. This fact is only consistent with spherical Earth and cannot possibly be explained if Earth is flat.

As an example, on a flat Earth, the flight trip Auckland–Tokyo–Madrid is almost a straight route between the two locations. Meanwhile, Auckland–Santiago–Madrid involves a massive detour, and it should take much longer than the aforementioned straight route. However, contrary to what is expected in the flat Earth model, both routes have a similar flight duration.

The success of the original GPS satellite navigation system has generated all this competition. But so far these other efforts have found the work much more difficult than expected. A European consortium went forward with Galileo despite growing costs and technical problems. Initially, Galileo was to be funded with private money. But the costs climbed beyond the most optimistic estimates of future income, so now Galileo is being paid for with tax dollars, as was GPS and the competing Russian and Chinese systems.

Four of the European Union (EU) Galileo navigation satellites system went live in 2016 but the full complement of 30 satellites (24 active and six spares) will not be complete until 2020. Meanwhile there have been some technical problems. Galileo first became operational during 2012. The plan was to have all 30 Galileo satellites operational by 2019 and apparently that will only be a year late.

Galileo came about because the Europeans didn't like being dependent on an American system and didn't believe the Russians would be able to keep their GLONASS system viable. Galileo became operational because the European nations were willing to pay for a system that anyone could use without charge. Dual signal (GPS and Galileo) receivers won't cost much more (maybe 20 percent more) than GPS receivers do. Having two separate sets of signals makes for more reliable and accurate receivers. Also, the way Galileo is being set up, it will provide improved reliability in higher latitudes and in built up areas.

Russia's answer to GPS, GLONASS, was at full strength (24 satellites) in 1996, shortly after the Cold War ended. But the end of the Cold War in 1991 meant the end of the regular financing for GLONASS. Maintaining the system required launching replacement satellites every 5-7 years. By the end of 2002, only seven GLONASS birds were still operational. However, the Russian economy recovered and provided funds for a series of launches in 2003 that increased the number of active satellites to twelve. That went to 18 by the end of 2007 and Russia had 24 GLONASS satellites in orbit by 2011 with the system fully operational by 2012. As a result GLONASS was the first real competitor for GPS. However, GLONASS was not completely functional until 2016 because of delays in building all the ground control stations.

Since the start of the space age, more than 8,800 objects have been launched into orbit, according to estimates from the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs. But in a few years, that number could increase significantly. Private companies plan to launch thousands of satellites to beam internet to customers on Earth. SpaceX alone has announced plans to launch 42,000 satellites. If this happens, SpaceX will be responsible for about a fivefold increase in the number of spacecraft launched by all of humanity.

Delivery of service to customers (satellite internet and data transmission) is 20 times faster from satellites in low Earth orbit, than those in geostationary orbit.

"A look at world of deepfaking where artificial intelligence is used to manipulate viewers and spread misinformation.

Deepfakes are videos produced through the use of artificial intelligence. Melding images and sound, using things like face grafts, body transfers or voice imitations, they make people appear to say things they never said and do things they never did. They appear so real it is often difficult to tell if they are fake.

For now, the vast majority of deepfakes, 96 percent to be more precise, target women, mostly celebrities, where one woman's face is placed to appear on another's body, many times in the making of fake pornographic videos.

Bill Posters, digital artist and researcher, explained to The Listening Post's Tariq Nafi that: "It's women's bodies, identities and rights that are being transgressed and oppressed basically by quite a small but quite a prolific body of actors that are taking famous celebrity female actor's faces and transplanting those into pornography scenes, and there are huge websites that profit millions of dollars from displaying and sharing and streaming these kinds of deep fake pieces of pornography."

The bigger concern is this: Deepfakes could be used to spread misinformation, mess with politics, and manipulate electorates by fooling journalists and voters. And there are real-life examples already playing out across the world.

Take Gabon, where there were suspicions that all was not OK with President Ali Bongo. Having been abroad for medical treatment he had not been seen in public for months. Reports of his good health did nothing to convince the public so the government released a video.

The Space Foundation published the fourth quarter 2019 issue of The Space Report today and shared other key findings:

• Around the world, there are 40 active spaceports, 10 in development and at least 13 proposed.
• The U.S. has five times as many spaceports active, in development, or proposed compared to its nearest competitor, Russia, which currently has five active spaceports and no new known ones in development. China is third with four active spaceports.
• In 2018, with 198 spacecraft launched, the U.S. averaged 5.8 spacecraft per launch. Russia, with 60 spacecraft put in orbit, averaged 3.8 spacecraft per launch. China delivered 105 payloads to space, averaging 2.6 spacecraft per launch.
• In the last decade, according to NASA’s Ames Research Center, commercial rocket development has reduced the typical space launch cost by a factor of 20 while NASA’s launch cost to the International Space Station has declined by a factor of four. 
• The average price per kilogram for a launch prior to the year 2000 was US$18,500. In 2018, the Falcon 9 rocket price per kilogram to launch a payload into low Earth orbit was US$2,719. 
• At three U.S. spaceports alone, state investment in New Mexico, Virginia and California totals $455 million.

The Space Report’s 2019 analysis also examines the state of venture capital investment in commercial space and provides a global review of new space policies. Among the key points in these areas:

• In the last 10 years, more than $24.6 billion has been invested in space companies, with more than 20% of that total coming in 2018, according to Space Angels, an investor collective that focuses on early stage space investment.
• In the 2019 third quarter, 18 of 31 stocks tracked by the S-Network Space Index℠ gained value, with eight of the 18 growing by 12% or more. The S-Network Space Index tracks a global portfolio of publicly traded companies that are active in space-related businesses such as satellite-based telecommunications and rocket and satellite manufacturing.

Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin launched a reusable New Shepard rocket Wednesday, boosting an unpiloted capsule on a successful up-and-down flight to space in the 12th test of a spacecraft designed to carry "space tourists" and other commercial astronauts on brief forays above the atmosphere.

Running a day late because of bad weather — and delayed a few more hours by fog — the hydrogen-fueled New Shepard rocket lifted off from Blue Origin's west Texas flight facility at 12:53 p.m. EST, accelerating into a partly cloudy sky atop a brilliant jet of fiery exhaust.

The stubby rocket's BE-3 engine propelled the capsule to a velocity of about 2,227 mph, releasing the New Shepard capsule two minutes and 45 seconds after launch to soar on its own to an altitude of about 343,061 feet, or 65 miles.

NASA, the Air Force and the Federal Aviation Administration consider 50 miles the "boundary" between the discernible atmosphere and space while the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale, an international governing body for aviation-related sports and records, puts the threshold at 100 kilometers, or 62 miles.

The New Shepard capsule was designed to exceed both of those standards. Arcing over and falling back to Earth, on-board experiments — and, eventually, people — will experience about five minutes of weightlessness before the capsule plunges back into the thick lower atmosphere, descending to a relatively gentle touchdown under three large parachutes.

Mission duration, from launch to landing, was 10 minutes and 16 seconds.

"As we move towards verifying New Shepard for human spaceflight we are continuing to mature the safety and reliability of the vehicle," Blue Origin said in a news release.

The booster for this week's launch was making its sixth flight in a row. After releasing the New Shepard capsule, the booster, falling tail first back to Earth, deployed braking fins, restarted its engine and unfolded landing legs and settled to a pinpoint touchdown on a concrete pad near the launch gantry seven minutes and 25 seconds after liftoff.

The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission is directed by NASA to the Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) with support from several NASA centers:  the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), Johnson Space Center (JSC), Glenn Research Center (GRC), and Langley Research Center (LRC). 

DART is a planetary defense-driven test of technologies for preventing an impact of Earth by a hazardous asteroid.  DART will be the first demonstration of the kinetic impactor technique to change the motion of an asteroid in space.  The DART mission is in Phase C, led by APL and managed under NASA’s Solar System Exploration Program at Marshall Space Flight Center for NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office and the Science Mission Directorate’s Planetary Science Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington, DC.

Earth's magnetic North Pole has drifted so fast that authorities have had to officially redefine the location of the magnetic North Pole. The extreme wandering of the North Pole caused increasing concerns over navigation, especially in high latitudes.

Earth's magnetic field is known to have wandered and flipped in the geologic past. Earth's magnetic field is a result of spinning molten iron and nickel 1,800 miles below the surface. As the constant flow of molten metals in the outer core changes over time, it alters the external magnetic field.

What we've seen in the past hundred years is that the location of the magnetic North Pole has moved northward. That migration of the magnetic North Pole was switched into overdrive in the past few years, causing the pole to rapidly move. The increased speed with which the magnetic North Pole has moved prompted authorities to officially update its location. The official location of the magnetic poles is specified by the World Magnetic Model, which acts as the basis for navigation, communication, GPS, etc. around the globe.

On Monday, the World Magnetic Model updated their official location of the magnetic north. The model is typically updated every five years and was last updated in 2015. However, the recent rapid movement of the magnetic north prompted scientists to update the model early. In the recent past, the magnetic North Pole has moved 34 miles a year toward Russia. Just a half-century ago, the magnetic North Pole was wandering about 7 miles each year.

The king tides occur when the Earth, Moon and Sun are aligned at perigee and perihelion, resulting in the largest tidal range seen over the course of a year. (CNN)"I don't want to be a flat Earther," David Weiss says, his voice weary as he reflects on his personal awakening. "Would you wake up in the morning and want everyone to think you're an idiot?"

But Weiss is a flat Earther. Ever since he tried and failed to find proof of the Earth's curve four years ago, he's believed with an evident passion that our planet is both flat and stationary -- and it's turned his world upside down.

"I absolutely freaked out," Weiss tells CNN in a phone interview. "It literally whips the rug out from underneath you."

Now, Weiss finds it tedious to associate with the majority of people -- though he "unfortunately" still has some friends who believe in a round Earth. "I have no problem with anybody that wants to believe we live on a ball. That's their choice," he says. "It's just not something I resonate with."

Weiss' preferred community is those who share his life-altering belief.

And that community is vast.

This week, the businessman attended the third annual Flat Earth International Conference, held at an Embassy Suites hotel in suburban Dallas, Texas. Organizers told CNN that about 600 others went too.

Previous conferences have taken place in Raleigh and Denver -- while Brazil, Britain and Italy have also held flat-Earth conventions in recent years.

The event's schedule resembled any corporate conference, with some fairly noticeable twists. Speakers gave presentations including "Space is Fake" and "Testing The Moon: A Globe Lie Perspective." Awards for the year's best flat Earth-related videos were handed out. And believers reveled in an opportunity to meet several of the movement's most influential minds.
