The word "chemtrails" has trended on sunny mornings this summer - but what's the truth behind the conspiracy theory?
Look up at a clear blue sky and you might see puffy white trails behind aeroplanes.
They are made up mostly of water and are called contrails or vapour trails, but a growing number of people falsely believe they are evidence of something sinister going on.
Some think malign forces are spraying the population with dangerous chemicals - so-called chemtrails - for purposes that are neither entirely clear nor consistent.
A surge in conspiratorial thinking following the Covid pandemic along with the summer travel season and clear skies mean the once obscure chemtrails theory is now being promoted by major influencers.
What are contrails?
Contrails are formed when water vapour and fine soot particulates from burning jet fuel freeze into ice crystals. In low air humidity, the crystals just dissipate. In higher humidity, they persist, and end up creating visible vapour trails over large areas of sky.
Those humidity differences explain why some aircraft are seen producing vapour trails while others do not.
High humidity means that vapour trails can last for long periods and become thin layers of cirrus clouds, Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern told the BBC. Cirrus clouds are short, detached and hair-like and are found at high altitudes. It is unlikely that any of these purported chemicals in the clouds would even reach ground level because they are at such high altitudes, he said.
One persistent belief among followers of the theory is that early morning chemtrails encourage greater cloud cover later in the day - but this can be explained by the natural process of convection. This is the result of the sun warming the ground, causing warm air to rise and condense into clouds later in the day, the Met Office says.
How did the conspiracy theory begin?
The idea that governments or shadowy forces are routinely spraying the planet with chemicals from scheduled passenger flights took hold in the1990s.
Initially, believers claimed sprays containing a toxic metal, barium, were being used to either pacify or reduce populations.
But the idea evolved along the way, meaning today there are several strands of the chemtrail theory.
In recent years, followers have expanded their accusations, claiming the contrails are being used to spread Covid-19,distribute vaccines, initiate "mind control", reduce the population or vaguely promote a "new world order".

False allegations have trended so frequently this year that fact-checking charity Full Fact has posted 10 debunks since April.
Chemtrail influencers are highly active on platforms such as Facebook and Telegram, where they discuss the day's alleged "spraying" and track aircraft. Some suggest putting a bowl of white vinegar outside, saying that this clears "chemtrailed" skies.|
Chemtrail social media groups also often contain anti-vaccine posts and promote climate change denialism, feeding off of an uptick in conspiracy thinking during the Covid-19 pandemic and the rise of the QAnon conspiracy theory during the Trump presidency.

The phenomenon is international, with followers across UK, Europe, Australia and the Americas - in fact, anywhere under which commercial or military aircraft fly. And it is backed by a few celebrities and popular social media influencers.

Like many persistent conspiracies, the chemtrails idea comes with a kernel of truth.|
In the 1950s and 1960s, decades before the conspiracy theories were born, much of Britain was sprayed with airborne chemicals in a series of secret germ warfare tests. And in 1950, San Francisco was sprayed with a chemical agent from a ship to gauge the effects of a bioweapon attack on a populated area.
Chemtrails conspiracy theorists point to such secret experiments to bolster their cause. But their claims blow the historical record out of all proportion, as they claim we are constantly - and very visibly - being deliberately sprayed with tonnes of dangerous chemicals, for an ever-shifting variety of reasons.

Like other conspiracy theorists, chemtrail enthusiasts also latch on to news events to push their agenda, for instance in messages like this posted during the recent UK heatwave:
There is no evidence the claim in the tweet is true, nor does it explain the record temperatures across Europe at the same time.
The British Airline Pilots Association (BALPA) told the BBC it is aware of these chemtrail theories with "no evidential basis".
"The distraction of these false theories detracts from what really matters and from areas that we believe should be further studied," it added.
There is concern that high altitude jets contribute to long-term climate change - not through any deliberate release of secret chemicals, but instead through contrails in a mechanism known as "radiative forcing".
BALPA told the BBC it is campaigning for a comprehensive research trial into the effect aviation has on pollution, not CO2, as well as the impact contrails are having on a changing climate.

Dear Readers,
Since the unfortunate Covid-19 pandemic has shut down air travel, we are contacting the Flat Earth/Chemtrail conspirators to find out if their veiws about it have changed.
Questions for the Chemtrail folks:
1. Hello. So where have all the Chemtrails gone? How come I have not seen any for 6-months?
2. So then compared to this time last summer, are there MORE, the SAME, OR LESS Chemtrials?
3. How do you know it's a Chemtrail that you are looking at, and not just a commercial jet contrail? What criteria do you use to distinguish between the two?
4. You have said that Chemtrails are the dispersion of biological agents, barium, aluminum and strontium. When did you have your latest blood test, and what were the ppm (parts per million) detection of barium, aluminum or strontium in your blood?

China wants to boost its ability to modify the weather, and will extend an artificial rain and snow programme to cover at least 2.1m sq miles (5.5m sq km) of land by 2025, the country’s cabinet said late on Wednesday.
The state council said in policy guidelines it would ensure its weather modification capabilities would reach an “advanced” level by 2035, and would focus on revitalising rural regions, restoring ecosystems and minimising losses from natural disasters.
China has frequently made use of cloud seeding technologies to relieve droughts or clear the air ahead of major international events.
It has also been building a weather modification system in the Qinghai-Tibet plateau, Asia’s biggest freshwater reserve, with the aim of pumping large quantities of silver iodide into the clouds to increase rainfall.
The cabinet plan said China would continue its artificial weather operations in key areas such as the Qinghai-Tibet plateau, as well as the major ecological protection zones of the Yellow and Yangtze Rivers.
China will also build up its scientific capabilities and establish an experimental base and laboratory to improve its ability to induce or prevent rain, eliminate fog and improve air quality, it said.

@icewall flatearth - Where I live in the south, the sky is often humid. That naturally makes it not "dark blue." So for me that does not qualify. Please be more specific. Since they are called "Chemtrails," they must contain chemicals. Right? What chemicals have you detected in those trails? Please give me the list of what chemicals you discovered and detail how you got your results. What monitoring equipment did you use? Maybe I can buy one also and help you out. Thanks.

To protect me and my family, I need to know:

Anything less than specific answers are of no value to me or anyone else. Geo-engineering is too broad a topic - solar radiation management, carbon dioxide removal, and Earth radiation management. Of course in past cloud seeding to create rain was popular. The most common chemicals used for cloud seeding include silver iodide, potassium iodide and dry ice (solid carbon dioxide). Liquid propane, which expands into a gas, has also been used. This can produce ice crystals at higher temperatures than silver iodide. There is also lots of particulate material floating around in the atmosphere due to human pollution. Some particles are directly released into the air by the stirring up of dust by construction activities, paving, driving on unpaved roads, or even the wind. Similarly, smoke from vehicle exhaust, wood and other fuel burning and wildfires emits solid particles into the air. Suspended particles due to general pollution are usually 2.5 to 10-mico meters ins size. Then or course there are the aerosol's and components of acid rain (SO2 and NOX ). But that was not my question. Please answer the following with real specifics: 1. What is the criteria to positively identify a Chemtrail (verses a contrail) or other airborne gas/particulates? 2. What chemical components have you identified through sample testing. Please list their chemical or molecular equations (since I have a degree in Chemistry I'll understand it)? Thanks.

Wear a hazmat suit with oxygen tank's when outdoors, grow your own food's indoors , hydroponics, and use a reverse osmosis water filter on all water you consume. Other than that , good luck protecting anyone.. There's plenty of scientific data available on chemtrails.. Maybe it's been flagged from the search algorithm.. And you need to know specific channel names to find the information.. I have a few ..

IF you are concerned about the Chemtrail issue please show me a picture of yourself in a hazmat suit. Where did you buy yours from, and how much did it cost? As far as I can tell, Chemtrails are not part of the geo-engineering literature or discipline. I have found nothing in the geo-engineering sciences, articles, research, footnotes - references about it, or any documented cases of illness due to Chemtrials. So accordingly, Chemtrails are not germane to geo-engineering. You should not point to “geo-engineering” as an explanation for where Chemtrails are hiding, or where there is a coverup. Geo-engineering is about changing the Earth (not humans). If anything, Chemtrail should be classified under “Population Control.” That would be more appropriate. So one of your recommendations is to garden your own food. That being the case, are you saying that “your garden” in particular is free from Chemtrail dumping, and it is safe to eat from it? That question leads to - are there some areas of the country that are Chemtrail free? And if so, where are those areas? I live down south so where should I move to escape the Chemtrail scourge? Where is it safe? Unless of course you consider Chemtrials to be ubiquitous and therefore why try at all to save yourself. Our drinking water is secure. Every single city/county water department regularly tests for toxins and biological agents, especially during the warmer months when algae blooms and lake dead zones develop. Since a cities’ water is gathered from the local watershed (river and lakes) which cover a large acreage area, if anything, Chemtrial toxins should be found there, but they are not. And none have so far. I have never seen a news story, by way of “Chemtrails sprayed today and 100 people now in the hospital vomiting and sick.” Why not? Since I cannot find any articles about people getting sick or dying directly from Chemtrails, please send me your URL references. I can’t find any studies about Chemtrials. Thanks
