Flat Earth And Other Hot Potatoes - Patricia Steere/ Brian Mullin. 15 Flat Earth & Other Hot Potatoes
Dear Flat Earth And Other Hot Potatoes (Patricia Steere)
Fact check = You FAIL
Your statement at time mark 23:45, "Now when I fly I'm looking for curvature, and I know there isn't any."
The issue is that at 35,000 feet, the elevation that an average commercial jet flies at, the curvature of the Earth is only 3.3 degrees, which you cannot see looking out your window.
Figuring out curvature is just SIMPLE GEOMETRY.
Calculate curvature yourself.
Fact:
According to the simple mathematics of spherical geometry, considering the Earth diameter as 7,926.41 miles...
> An observer at 18,000 feet above sea level would see a 2.4 degree horizon curvature.
> An observer on Mt. Everest at 29,028 feet above the sea level would see a 3.02 degree horizon curvature.
> An observer at 35,000 feet above sea level would see a 3.3 degree horizon curvature.
> An observer at 105,600 feet (20 miles) above the sea level would see a 5.8 degree horizon curvature.
> An observer at 250,000 feet above sea level would see a 8.9 degree horizon curvature.
> An observer at 300,000 feet above sea level would see a 9.7 degree horizon curvature.
Conclusion:
You need to look at the Earth from an elevation of at least 300,000 feet, to be able to make a decision whether the Earth is curved or not.
You’re kidding yourself and not getting the true picture of reality from your 35,000-foot airplane seat.
